Please join the University of Washington’s Near East Languages and Civilizations department for their event of the year: a lecture and concert by Irene Markoff, one of the foremost experts in the culture, rituals, and music of Alevi-Bektashi Sufi communities in Turkey and the Balkans, and an accomplished vocalist and musician in the Turkish mystical and folk traditions. She received her doctorate from the Ethnomusicology Division of the University of Washington's School of Music, and currently teaches music studies courses and performance at York University in Toronto.

Irene will speak about her experience of popular Sufism among Turkish-speaking Alevi-Bektashi communities in southern Bulgaria, and give a performance of Alevi-Bektashi and traditional Turkish music. Admission is free.
