Based on research in the Jewish community in Istanbul, this talk shares Dr. Maureen Jackson's, 2008-2009 Haze D. Cole Fellow in Jewish studies, unexpected exploration of women well-versed in an historical synagogue repertoire, the Maftirim, performed by men on Shabbat. How did a girl
growing up in 1930s Istanbul learn and perform these songs? As a woman, how did she negotiate communal religious and musical expectations in a changing society? Through memoirs and oral histories, this talk will explore these questions and more, challenging the gendered
dichotomies of male (Hebrew/liturgical/textual) and female (Ladino/folk/oral) in Sephardic music scholarship.
