Cole Fellow in Jewish studies, unexpected exploration of women well-versed in an historical synagogue repertoire, the Maftirim, performed by men on Shabbat. How did a girl growing up in 1930s Istanbul learn and perform these songs? As a woman, how did she negotiate communal religious and musical expectations in a changing society?
