Based on research in the Jewish community in Istanbul, this talk shares Dr. Maureen Jackson's, 2008-2009 Haze D. Cole Fellow in Jewish studies, unexpected exploration of women well-versed in an historical synagogue repertoire, the Maftirim, performed by men on Shabbat. How did a girl
