World renowned Turkish rock musicians Koray Candemir and Serkan Celikoz are bringing their duo project MASKOTT back to Seattle one more time to honor the city that inspired their debut album Tuval before heading back to tour in Turkey for a while. They will be performing songs from their new album as well as many "crowd-pleasing" hits from their former band Kargo! Bryan Lash (drums) and Ruchan Uner (bass) will accompany Maskott on stage.
On Tuesday, August 31st, TACAWA and the Turkish Studies Student Association at the University of Washington are honored to host Mr. Ethem Yenigun, a former staff member of the Turkish think tank TESEV and an expert on migration and socioeconomic development in Southeast Anatolia. Mr. Yenigun will present research and lead a roundtable discussion on this topic, as well as discuss Turkey’s EU accession process.
Interested in studying Turkish, or know someone who is? Turkish classes coordinated by TACAWA are again being offered in Seattle and Bellevue at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels! In addition to providing language education, this experienced team of teachers - comprised of Derya Baykent, Selma Nadir, and Ferdi Nadir - also offers cultural information on Turkey in English at the end of their lessons.
The fall quarter will include two six-week sessions - from September 13th to October 20th, and November 1st to December 15th - at a price of $250 per six-week session.

As some of you know, our president Yesim has recently decided to move to Chicago to pursue her graduate degree. We thank her for all of her valuable contributions to TACAWA and the Turkish American community so far, and wish her the best of luck and success in her new endeavors!

Presented by the Mevlevi Order of America, this concert will feature classical dervish music by Timucin Cevikoglu, as well as inspirational turning by the Mevlevi Order of America Ensemble and Whirling Dervishes in the tradition of the Sufi poet Mevlana Celaladdin Rumi.
Timucin Cevikoglu is a master of the ney (reed flute), kudum (Turkish kettle drums) and vocals, a Ph.D. of Musical Sciences, author, composer, multi-media recording artist, teacher and Mevlevi dervish. The Anadolu Turkish Folk Dancers will be back on the International Dance Stage at Seattle Center's annual Folklife Festival on Sunday, May 30, 2010, 2:20 - 2:50pm. They will be performing very lively authentic dances from Gaziantep (adults & youth), Edirne (adults), Trabzon (adults), Istanbul (adult-solo), the Caucasus (youth) and Georgia (adults).
The International Stage is located in the Exhibition Hall, between McCaw Hall & Intiman Theatre on Mercer Street, north of the Seattle Center campus.
